Pichwai art is a traditional painting style from Rajasthan, India, used to decorate temple backdrops, particularly for Lord Krishna. The name "pichwai" means "back hanging" in Hindi. Known for intricate designs and vibrant colors, Pichwai paintings have gained worldwide popularity.

History and Origin: Pichwai painting originated in the 17th century in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, home to the Shrinathji Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Artists from this region created these paintings to depict Krishna's life and stories, and it’s also known as Shreenathji painting.

Themes and Motifs: Pichwai paintings feature Shrinathji with distinct features and include floral, animal, and geometric patterns. Themes vary with seasons, such as pink lotuses for summer and a full moon for Sharad Purnima. Other themes include Raas Leela, Holi, and Annakut. Each painting typically has 24 boxes, called swaroops, depicting various scenes of Krishna and his companions.

The main section of the painting illustrates the Raas Leela on the night of Sharad Purnima, where the earthly and celestial realms intertwine. Shri Nathji (a form of the deity Krishna) is shown in a central shrine-like structure, surrounded by female devotees (gopis) dancing and celebrating. The rectangular borders surrounding the main scene are filled with twenty-two darshan (scenes) of devotion to Shri Nathji, offering a narrative of interconnected stories. The lower part of the painting depicts several cows and calves, with people around them, symbolizing the pastoral life associated with Krishna.
